Prerequisites<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Download Windows Server 2012 R2<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>If you plan on completing this Step-By-Step in a virtual lab, it is recommended to\u00a0download the FREE Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 first.
    \n<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. Check\u00a0to ensure the\u00a0Domain Functional Level is currently setup to\u00a0at least\u00a0Windows 2003 mode. This is the lowest required Domain Functional Level\u00a0that would allow a\u00a0Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller installation. Windows NT \/ 2000 Domain Controllers are not supported via this process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Via\u00a0the\u00a0Active Directory Users and Computers<\/strong>\u00a0console, select\u00a0the domain\u00a0via the\u00a0right mouse button\u00a0on it.<\/li>\n
    2. Select\u00a0Raise Domain Functional Level<\/strong>\u00a0and review the\u00a0Current domain functional level<\/strong>\u00a0reported\"<\/a>\n

      The Domain Functional Level\u00a0does not need to be raised if the\u00a0Current domain functional level is reporting\u00a0Windows Server 2003<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      NOTE:\u00a0<\/strong>Should a lower domain be showcased (i.e., Windows Server 2000), please keep in mind that raising Domain Functional Level is a one time action and cannot be reverted. Remember Windows NT \/ 2000 Domain Controllers are not supported via this process.<\/li>\n

    3. Ensure your profile is a member of the\u00a0Enterprise Admins group.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Getting Started<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Setup and install your Windows Server 2012 machine
        \n<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n
      2. Configure\u00a0the new server’s\u00a0IP address to correspond to the target domain and ensure the existing Domain Controllers, where DNS is installed and configured, are visible by your new Windows Server 2012 install.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Setting Up Domain Controller Fuctionality<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Open the\u00a0Server Manager console<\/strong>\u00a0and click on\u00a0Add roles and features<\/strong>\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        2. Select\u00a0Role-based of featured-based installation<\/strong>\u00a0and select\u00a0Next<\/strong>.\"
          \n<\/a><\/li>\n
        3. Select the\u00a0Active Directory Directory Services\u00a0<\/strong>role.\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        4. Accept\u00a0the default features required by clicking the\u00a0Add Features<\/strong>\u00a0button.\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        5. On the\u00a0Features<\/strong>\u00a0screen click the\u00a0Next<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/li>\n
        6. On the\u00a0Confirm installation selections<\/strong>\u00a0screen click the\u00a0Install<\/strong>\u00a0button.NOTE:<\/strong>\u00a0Check off the\u00a0Restart the destination server automatically if required<\/strong>\u00a0box to expedite the install should you be able to reset the target server automatically.\n

        7. Click the\u00a0Close<\/strong>\u00a0button once the installation has been completed.\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        8. Once completed, notification is made available on the dashboard highlighted by\u00a0an exclamation mark. Select it and amidst the drop down menu select\u00a0Promote this server to a domain<\/strong>\u00a0controller.<\/strong>\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        9. Select\u00a0add a\u00a0Domain Controller into existing domain<\/strong>\"
          \n<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n
        10. Ensure the target domain is specified.\u00a0 If it is not, please either\u00a0Select<\/strong>\u00a0the proper domain or enter the proper domain in the field provided.<\/li>\n
        11. Click\u00a0Change,\u00a0<\/strong>provide the required Enterprise Administrator credentials and click the Next button.<\/li>\n
        12. Define if server should be a\u00a0Domain Name System DNS server<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Global Catalog (GC)<\/strong>.\u00a0Select\u00a0the Site to which this DC belongs to and define\u00a0Directory Services Restoration Mode (DSRM)<\/strong>\u00a0password for this DC\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        13. Click the\u00a0Next<\/strong>\u00a0button on the DNS options screen.<\/li>\n
        14. In the\u00a0Additional Options<\/strong>\u00a0screen\u00a0you are provided with the option to install the Domain Controller from\u00a0Install From Media<\/strong>\u00a0(IFM).<\/strong>Additionally you are provided the option to select the point from which DC replication should be completed.\u00a0The server will choose the best location for AD database replication if not specified. Click the\u00a0Next<\/strong>\u00a0button once completed.\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        15. Specify location for AD database and SYSVOL and Click the\u00a0Next<\/strong>\u00a0button.\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        16. Next up is the Schema and Domain preparation.\u00a0\u00a0Alternately, one could run\u00a0Adprep<\/a>\u00a0prior to commencing these steps, Regardless, if Adprep is not detected, it will automatically be completed on your behalf.\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        17. Finally, the\u00a0Review Options<\/strong>\u00a0screen provides\u00a0a summary\u00a0of all of the selected options for server promotion. As an added bonus, when clickingView Script<\/strong>\u00a0button you are provided with the PowerShell script to\u00a0automate future installations. To click the\u00a0Next<\/strong>\u00a0button to continue.\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        18. Should\u00a0all the prerequisites\u00a0pass,\u00a0click the\u00a0Install<\/strong>\u00a0button to\u00a0start the installation.\"<\/a><\/li>\n
        19. After it completes the required tasks and the server restarts, the new Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller setup is completed.<\/li>\n
        20. Lastly, on each server\/workstation within the target domain require a NIC\u00a0properties configuration update to point to\u00a0the new Domain Controller. Open the\u00a0DHCP management<\/strong>\u00a0console, select\u00a0Option no. 006<\/strong>\u00a0and under server\/scope options and add\u00a0the IP address of your new Domain Controller as DNS server.\"<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
