For many IT admins, this is a great opportunity to start upgrading infrastructures to Windows 2012 or Windows 2012R2. Since DCPromo was depreciated in Windows Server 2012, the following article serves as a step-by-step guide to creating a Windows 2012R2 domain controller and adding it to an existing environment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Adding the Windows 2012R2 Server Domain Services Role<\/h2>\n<p>There are a number of ways to get to the role management screen. The easiest will be to do it from the Server Manager window. If this window has already been closed, right click on <strong>My Computer<\/strong>, and select <strong>Manage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.interworks.com\/sites\/default\/files\/blog\/u143\/Blog-2012DCAdd-SS01.png\" alt=\"Server Manager- Dashboard\" width=\"640\" height=\"423\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once the Server Manager has been opened, click on <strong>Manage<\/strong> and select <strong>Add Roles and Features<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.interworks.com\/sites\/default\/files\/blog\/u143\/Blog-2012DCAdd-SS02.png\" alt=\"Add Roles and Features\" width=\"406\" height=\"206\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once the Add Roles and Features Wizard has started up, select <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.interworks.com\/sites\/default\/files\/blog\/u143\/Blog-2012DCAdd-SS03.png\" alt=\"Add Roles and Features Wizard\" width=\"640\" height=\"453\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the next page, the default settings can be used.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.interworks.com\/sites\/default\/files\/blog\/u143\/Blog-2012DCAdd-SS04.png\" alt=\"Add Roles and Features Wizard - Default Settings\" width=\"640\" height=\"453\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under server selection, the default settings should be selecting the <strong>domain control<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.interworks.com\/sites\/default\/files\/blog\/u143\/Blog-2012DCAdd-SS05.png\" alt=\"Server Selection\" width=\"640\" height=\"453\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the Server Roles page, select <strong>Active Directory Domain Services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.interworks.com\/sites\/default\/files\/blog\/u143\/Blog-2012DCAdd-SS06.png\" alt=\"Server Roles Page\" width=\"640\" height=\"453\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Windows will prompt for any additional features that will be needed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.interworks.com\/sites\/default\/files\/blog\/u143\/Blog-2012DCAdd-SS07.png\" alt=\"Add Roles and Features Wizard - Additional Features\" width=\"453\" height=\"470\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next window will prompt with a few additional notes regarding best practices. Note that the Active Directory Domain Services Role will install the following in a new environment:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DNS Services<\/li>\n<li>DFS Namespaces Services<\/li>\n<li>DFS Replication Services- Replication Services<\/li>\n<li>Group Policy Management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.interworks.com\/sites\/default\/files\/blog\/u143\/Blog-2012DCAdd-SS08.png\" alt=\"Active Directory Domain Services\" width=\"640\" height=\"453\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The confirmation page will display all components that will be reinstalled.
