This is my first article on VirtualBox and I\u2019ll describe the steps involved in creating a Virtual Machine, mounting the ISO file of your Operating System, booting from it and starting the installation. From then on installation of OS will be the same as doing the same on a physical machine. VirtualBox is free to download from http:\/\/www.virtualbox.org\/wiki\/Downloads. After installing VirtualBox follow the steps below. \u201cGuest\u201d OS refers to the operating system which is to be installed inside a virtual machine whereas \u201chost\u201d OS is the operating system installed on the physical machine.<span id=\"more-1216\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Step1: Create a Virtual Machine<\/h2>\n<p>First job is to create a virtual machine, to do so open VirtualBox and click \u201cNew\u201d from the toolbar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1217\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1217\" title=\"create new virtual machine\" src=\"http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/create_new_virtual_machine-300x56.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/create_new_virtual_machine-300x56.png 300w, http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/create_new_virtual_machine.png 569w\" alt=\"create new virtual machine\" width=\"300\" height=\"56\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Select &#8220;New&#8221; from the toolbar to create a new Virtual Machine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Enter any name for your Virtual Machine and select the Operating System you\u2019re going to use as your GUEST OS.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1218\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1218\" title=\"select guest os and set a name\" src=\"http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/select_guest_os_and_set_a_name-300x209.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/select_guest_os_and_set_a_name-300x209.png 300w, http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/select_guest_os_and_set_a_name.png 560w\" alt=\"select guest os and set a name\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Select the OS you are going to use inside your Virtual Machine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Select the RAM size to be allocated to your guest OS, choose this wisely it should be equal to or more than the minimum system requirement of your guest OS at the same time if it goes more than 50% of your physical machine\u2019s RAM it\u2019ll slow down your host OS.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1219\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1219\" title=\"select ram size\" src=\"http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/select_ram_size-300x209.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/select_ram_size-300x209.png 300w, http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/select_ram_size.png 564w\" alt=\"select ram size\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Select the amount of RAM to be allocated to the Virtual Machine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You need to create a Virtual Hard disk for your Virtual Machine, this is just a file with a .vdi extension which will contain all files stored inside that virtual machine. Choose a size suited for your guest OS and select the \u201cDynamically expanding disk\u201d if you want to save disk creation time and file size. If you choose \u201cFixed size disk\u201d it will take up the entire size specified but the performance of your Virtual Machine will be better. After clicking finish move on to the next step.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Change the boot order of the VM<\/h2>\n<p>Right click the newly created Virtual machine and go to settings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1220\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1220\" title=\"edit the virtual machine\" src=\"http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/edit_the_virtual_machine-300x137.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/edit_the_virtual_machine-300x137.png 300w, http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/edit_the_virtual_machine.png 569w\" alt=\"edit the virtual machine\" width=\"300\" height=\"137\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Go to the settings of your Virtual Machine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Select storage from the left side list, select the CD icon and from the right select \u201cChoose a virtual CD\/DVD disk file\u201d, navigate to the ISO image file of the OS on your computer. Now the OS image is mounted to your Virtual machine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1223\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1223\" title=\"select iso image as disc\" src=\"http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/select_iso_image_as_disc-300x169.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/select_iso_image_as_disc-300x169.png 300w, http:\/\/websistent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/select_iso_image_as_disc.png 904w\" alt=\"select iso image as disc\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ISO image selected will be mounted in the Optical drive of your Virtual Machine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To change the boot device order of your virtual machine go to the \u201cSystem\u201d option from the left side list, select Hard Disk and click the up arrow to bring it to the top of the list. If you press ctrl+alt+del the physical machine will also be affected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[Right Ctrl] + H<\/strong> \u2013 (Halt) Equivalent to pressing the power button on the physical machine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[Right Ctrl] + R<\/strong> \u2013 (Reset) Equivalent to pressing the reset button, will reset your virtual machine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[Right CTRL] + F<\/strong> \u2013 (Fullscreen) Toggles fullscreen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A tutorial on how to install an Operating System in VirtualBox.
