However, DCPromo was deprecated with the release of Server 2012.<\/p>\n<h3>Installing Active Directory on Server 2012<\/h3>\n<p>You can still add the binaries through the GUI, but underneath the hood even that is using PowerShell. For that reason we will keep the whole article in PowerShell. To add the binaries simply open a PowerShell Console and run the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Add-WindowsFeature -name ad-domain-services \u2013IncludeManagementTools \u2013Restart<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn3.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/image180.png\" width=\"656\" height=\"306\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the installation is complete your computer will reboot. We are now ready to install a new domain controller in a new forest, so open a new PowerShell Console. There are three PowerShell commands you can use to promote your server into a DC:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Install-ADDSDomainController \u2013\u00a0Creates a new domain controller in an existing domain.<\/li>\n<li>Install-ADDSDomain \u2013\u00a0Creates a new domain in an existing forest.<\/li>\n<li>Install-ADDSForest \u2013\u00a0Creates a new forest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since we don\u2019t already have a forest we will need to use the Install-ADDSForest cmdlet.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Install-ADDSForest \u2013DomainName \u201ccorp.howtogeek.com\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn3.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/image181.png\" width=\"656\" height=\"306\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You will then be prompted for the Restore Mode password and asked to confirm that a server reboot is OK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn3.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/image182.png\" width=\"656\" height=\"306\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now you can go grab a cup of coffee while it sets up your new Domain Controller.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn3.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/image183.png\" width=\"656\" height=\"306\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once your server is back up you\u2019re good to go.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn3.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/image184.png\" width=\"656\" height=\"306\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s all there is to it folks.
