{"id":1359,"date":"2013-08-22T04:06:28","date_gmt":"2013-08-22T04:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/microsoftgeek.com\/?p=1359"},"modified":"2018-09-06T23:15:59","modified_gmt":"2018-09-06T23:15:59","slug":"how-to-setup-a-windows-2008-r2-sntpntp-server-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsoftgeek.com\/?p=1359","title":{"rendered":"How to Setup a Windows 2008 R2 SNTP\/NTP Server"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Setting up an SNTP\/NTP server in Windows is <em><strong>not intuitive<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is: When configured correctly, you can use the Windows Time (W32Time) service as an SNTP\/NTP server for both windows and non-windows SNTP\/NTP clients.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to do it:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click <strong>Start<\/strong>, click <strong>Run<\/strong>, type regedit, and then click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Locate and then click the following registry entry:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\W32Time\\Config\\<\/li>\n<li>In the right pane, right-click <strong>AnnounceFlags<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Modify<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Edit DWORD Value<\/strong> dialog box, under <strong>Value data<\/strong>, type 5, and then click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Enable NTPServer.\n<ol>\n<li>Locate and then click the following registry subkey:\n<p align=\"left\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\<br \/>\nServices\\W32Time\\TimeProviders\\NtpServer\\<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the right pane, right-click <strong>Enabled<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Modify<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Edit DWORD Value<\/strong> dialog box, type 1 under <strong>Value data<\/strong>, and then click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>At the command prompt, type the following command to restart the Windows Time service, and then press ENTER:<strong>net stop w32time &amp;&amp; net start w32time<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This should get you setup with minimal registry hack impact.<\/p>\n<h3>Tips<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure W32Time is set to Automatic startup mode.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure UDP 123 is allowed through your firewall.<\/li>\n<li>Use this <strong>InternetTime<\/strong> program to help you debug connectivity to your SNTP\/NTP server.\n<div id=\"scid:8eb9d37f-1541-4f29-b6f4-1eea890d4876:c7706d2a-ef85-43b0-886a-785fa17726b8\">\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/bchavez.bitarmory.com\/images\/bchavez_bitarmory_com\/WindowsLiveWriter\/HowtoSetupaWindows2008R2SNTPNTPServer_1E4\/internettime_1.zip\" target=\"_self\">internettime.zip<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Setting up an SNTP\/NTP server in Windows is not intuitive.
