Today we\u2019re going to show you how to install it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: this is part of our ongoing series teaching IT administration basics, and might not apply to everybody.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Installing Hyper-V<\/h3>\n<p>Launch the Server Manager, by clicking on the pinned icon or using the Start Menu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sshot-1\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/sshot-17.png\" width=\"287\" height=\"157\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the Server Manager launches, right-click on roles and select Add Roles from the context menu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sshot-2\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/sshot-22.png\" width=\"444\" height=\"362\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click next on the Before You Begin screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sshot-3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/sshot-32.png\" width=\"650\" height=\"486\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now select Hyper-V from the list of available roles and click next.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sshot-4 next on intro to hyper v\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/sshot-4-next-on-intro-to-hyper-v.png\" width=\"650\" height=\"486\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click next to skip past the Introduction to Hyper-V, now select the network adapter that you want to use to create a virtual network for your virtual machines, then click next.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sshot-5\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/sshot-58.png\" width=\"650\" height=\"486\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You will be asked to confirm that you want to install Hyper-V, just click the install button to kick off the installation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sshot-6\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/sshot-66.png\" width=\"650\" height=\"486\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the installation is complete you will be told that you need to restart the server, you can do so by clicking on the link.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sshot-7\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/sshot-74.png\" width=\"650\" height=\"486\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When your server has restarted you will be able to manage Hyper-V from Server Manager under the roles node, you can also manage it by launching a dedicated Hyper-V MMC from the Administrative Tools section of the Start Menu.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Windows Server 2008 R2 and later releases of the product ship with a virtualization platform called Hyper-V, which works quite well since it\u2019s built into Windows.
