{"id":1307,"date":"2013-06-27T04:57:17","date_gmt":"2013-06-27T04:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/microsoftgeek.com\/?p=1307"},"modified":"2013-06-27T04:57:17","modified_gmt":"2013-06-27T04:57:17","slug":"schedule-synctoy-to-run-automatically-with-task-scheduler-in-windows-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsoftgeek.com\/?p=1307","title":{"rendered":"Schedule SyncToy to Run Automatically With Task Scheduler in Windows 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SyncToy is a great tool to help you keep your files and folders synced between drives and devices.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how you can make it do sync automatically so your files will stay synced even if you forget to sync them.<\/p>\n<p>By default, SyncToy only synchronizes your files when your fun the program and directly tell it to sync.\u00a0 This might work fine for syncing files to a flash drive before heading out on a trip, but makes it difficult if you\u2019re using it to synchronize files regularly between folders or drives on your computer or with Dropbox.\u00a0 Windows includes an often overlooked scheduling tool that can automatically run many applications without any action on your part.\u00a0 Let\u2019s see how you can setup SyncToy to automatically sync with the Task Scheduler.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Automatically Run SyncToy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, make sure you have SyncToy installed and have some syncs setup.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image142.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb69.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"363\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now open Task Scheduler to get SyncToy automatically syncing.\u00a0 Type <em>Task Scheduler<\/em> in the Search box in the Start Menu and hit Enter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sshot-2010-08-09-[15-06-24]\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/sshot20100809150624.png\" width=\"438\" height=\"178\" border=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once Task Scheduler opens, click <em>Create Basic Task<\/em> on the right sidebar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image144.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb71.png\" width=\"476\" height=\"398\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enter a name and a description for your task in the dialog that opens so you\u2019ll be able to easily recognize your task.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image145.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb72.png\" width=\"638\" height=\"480\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Choose how often you want to run the task.\u00a0 Note that <em>Daily<\/em> is the most frequent you can select in the dialog, but we can tweak this later in the settings.\u00a0 Click <em>Next<\/em> to continue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image146.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb73.png\" width=\"424\" height=\"306\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be asked to add additional settings depending on the trigger you selected previously.\u00a0 If you chose <em>Daily<\/em>, then the default settings should work fine.\u00a0 Note that it will automatically run daily at the current time; if you\u2019d rather it run at a different time, enter the time you\u2019d like in the box.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image147.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb74.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"227\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, you\u2019ll be asked what you want the action to do\u2026Click <em>Start a program<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image148.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb75.png\" width=\"484\" height=\"246\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the <em>Program\/script<\/em> box, enter the following including the quotes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cC:\\Program Files\\SyncToy 2.1\\SyncToyCmd.exe\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then, in the <em>Add arguments<\/em> box, enter \u2013<em>R<\/em> to run all of your syncs each time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image149.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb76.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"237\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Alternately, if you\u2019d only like to run one of your syncs, enter \u2013<em>R \u201cyour sync name\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0 Make sure to enter the sync name inside quotes if it contains any spaces.\u00a0 Once you\u2019re finished, click <em>Next<\/em> to continue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image150.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb77.png\" width=\"490\" height=\"87\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you left out the quotes in the program\u2019s field, Task Scheduler will ask if you want to run <em>C:\\Program<\/em> with the remainder as an argument.\u00a0 Click <em>No<\/em> to keep it like you entered, and Task Scheduler will add the quotes correctly for you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image151.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb78.png\" width=\"524\" height=\"257\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re finally finished.\u00a0 The Wizard will show you a summary of the sync settings; click <em>Finish<\/em> to save the changes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image341.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image34_thumb.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"453\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now your sync will automatically run as you set, and you\u2019ll never have to worry about running it manually again!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Edit Your Sync Schedule<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to make your files sync more often or change other things about your task, you can easily do so from the Task Schedule interface.\u00a0 Click on the <em>Task Scheduler Library<\/em> on the left side to find your task.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image152.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb79.png\" width=\"428\" height=\"253\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scroll through the tasks listed, and find the one you created previously.\u00a0 You\u2019ll see an overview of its settings in the preview underneath.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image153.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb80.png\" width=\"440\" height=\"328\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the right sidebar, click <em>Properties<\/em> to change its settings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image154.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb81.png\" width=\"366\" height=\"288\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To change how frequently it syncs, click the <em>Triggers<\/em> tab and double-click on your time listed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image155.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb82.png\" width=\"420\" height=\"256\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now you can select to have it repeat the task every hour or any other time you want, for as long as you want.\u00a0 This dialog is much more flexible than the previous one used when creating the task.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image156.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb83.png\" width=\"633\" height=\"550\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back in the <em>Properties<\/em> dialog, the <em>Conditions<\/em> tab lets you choose whether or not to run this task when your computer is running on battery power if you\u2019re using a laptop\/netbook.\u00a0 By default it will only run when on AC power, but you can uncheck the box if you\u2019d rather it sync even if you\u2019re on battery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image157.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb84.png\" width=\"385\" height=\"350\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can also go ahead and run the task manually from the Task Scheduler if you\u2019d like.\u00a0 You may notice a command prompt window open while the sync is running, but it won\u2019t require any input from you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image158.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/image_thumb85.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"301\" border=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No matter what you need to sync, SyncToy is a handy tool to make sure all of your files are kept in different locations.\u00a0 You can run as many syncs as you want automatically with the Task Scheduler, freeing you up for more important tasks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SyncToy is a great tool to help you keep your files and folders synced between drives and devices.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how you can make it do sync automatically so your files will stay synced even if you forget to sync them.
